Glaze time!!! The samples are finished and I think it took me all of 5 minutes to pick out my new favorite colors. :)

I already have pieces bisque fired and ready for glazing! I can't wait to see the finished product...

Oh the joys of new clay...

One thing I didn't consider when we decided to move to Texas was having to find a new clay and glaze supplier! It's almost like starting from scratch. Each clay is different. The color, texture and way the clay reacts with a glaze can compliment a piece of pottery or make it look tragically awkward. Trust me- I've had my fair share of tragically awkward pieces because I didn't feel like testing out the color first :) I learned that lesson the hard way!

Good news: I have found a new clay supplier-YAY! Of course, like everything else in Texas, the name is uniquely Texan as well...

Last week I set out to make new color samples and it has been quite a task! I didn't realize I had purchased so many different colors over my last few trips to the store :)

So setting up an ETSY store is way more involved than I thought it would be! I just figured I would upload some pics and sell some stuff. WRONG!!! I'm beginning to think I need a full blown tutor for this :)

Thanks to my friend and Sincerely Yours of Madison Owner Elizabeth Bryant, I have been on my computer the last 2 hours downloading free fonts from the CUTEST WEBSITE EVER.

I'm opening an Etsy store!!!! I'm not open yet, so don't get too excited. I promise it will be worth the wait though!

I hope to sell a mix of paintings, pottery, and other handmade goodies. Items for children's rooms, nurseries, kitchens, dens and everywhere in between. Who knows what all I'll come up with :)

I hope to have it up and running by the first of October so fingers crossed everyone.
In the meantime, I plan on posting pics of some of the available items on my blog for your enjoyment!

Boot Jacks

Our latest project...

We've started making custom boot jacks! I love these! These are handmade from start to finish complete with a hand cut cedar rest to ensure it's super easy to use. These jacks may be used for men's or women's boots.

For this one we used my favorite TEXAS flag as inspiration.

Several years ago (yes, I said YEARS) my husband and I bought a box of old boots at a yard sale. We figured one of these days we would think of something to do with the old leather. We finally did! Our boot jacks can be made with new or vintage leather.

Obsessions!!!

Colors, stores, people, movies, food- obsessions come in all varieties, but I'm beginning to think mine are a little odd. Allow me to elaborate...

I'm brainstorming for a wedding I'm designing when I realize that my obsessions are resurfacing...AGAIN!! What are they you ask? While I am definitely obsessed with food (especially that of the Southern persuasion- YUM!) the others aren't quite so typical.

Drum roll please...

I, Kristen King, am OBSESSED with mason jars, burlap and brown paper bags.

They say admitting the problem is the first step to recovery...right?!

Mason jars = my favorite thing EVER! I mean what else can you drink from, use as a vase, hang for a lantern and store homemade goodies in?! As far as I'm concerned, it's be best thing since sliced bread. No question.

As for the brown paper bag, it's mainly a color thing for me. I love-Love-LOVE the color of a paper grocery sack! I love it so much I took one with me when picking out my wedding invitations, bridesmaids dresses and paint for my house! Seriously, they are all a perfect match to a brown paper bag. (Not normal, right?!)

I think my burlap fetish was fueled by my brown paper bag obsession. Of course the color is PERFECT! Not only that, I love the smell, texture and 101 ways you can use it. Curtains, slipcovers, Christmas tree skirts, table toppers, wrapping paper, pottery molds- the list could go on forever!

Now that I'm thinking about it, my obsessions have been the inspiration behind some of my most meaningful and creative event designs. You can definitely see a little bit of me in each of my events. I can't wait to see what I come up with for this wedding! It's going to be so much fun!

Did I mention the wedding is in a barn? I'm sensing a fourth obsession...

Dinner Plate Order

Here are some pics from my latest custom plate order for my sister-in-law. She had a cross themed table at an event for West University Baptist and Crosspoint Church called Table Grace. She picked the color and design from samples I had made for her.

She also purchased cross magnets for her 'giveaway' which are in the small craft box to the right. I had a little extra clay left for her order, so I made cross embellishments to tie on each box! Sometimes I can be quite the overachiever! :)

Wedding Business

I have had several people ask me if I am going to continue doing weddings and the answer is...YES!!!!

Contrary to popular belief, I am still available in the Mississippi area. I would appreciate any referrals for Jackson business even after I have moved, PLEASE!!! I have lots of friends and family in the area and a wedding weekend would give me a good excuse to visit! :) For all full wedding packages booked, all travel expenses will be waived. Yes, you read that right WAIVED!!!!

As far as Texas in concerned, if you know of anyone getting married there, I would appreciate you tossing my name in the hat for the job! So far, I have been blessed by word of mouth advertising to keep me book for the past 2 years! I would love to keep that going even in Texas!

Kristen King Art is relocating to Austin, Texas!!! Right now, I'm a weekend Texan, but once Christmas comes, I'll be a full time resident! As far as my wares are concerned, I still have friends and family in the area and can make deliveries or ship when needed! The groom-to-be loves the outdoors so I wanted to stay away from typical flowers for the tables and instead I collected antique hunting items, antlers, lanterns and went with a combination of textured greenery for centerpieces. I love to combine textures and sculptural compositions with flowers in order to create something not-so-typical when I arrange. Everything was live, ferns and cattails included.

Zingery/Dozier Wedding

Everything about this wedding was personal. All the food was served on the relative's collection of McCarty Pottery, drinks were served in mason jars, old coke crates, milk jugs and mason jars were used for centerpieces...the event was a wonderful reflection of the couples personal style.

The receptions was on the porch and front lawn of the house.

For the entrance to the house (stairs leading up to the hilltop ceremony) I used burlap runners wrapped along the stairs and used gauze to tie a bouquet of some of the bride's favorite, colorful wildflowers.

My husband and I built this table for the bride to use as her guestbook and program table at the top of the stairs leading to the house. It's made from an antique door and iron spindles.

Zingery/Dozier Wedding

Pictures from my first out of town Wedding at Weymouth Hall on the Bluffs overlooking the river in Natchez. I designed the event after talking with the bride and groom. I handled all every aspect of this even from design, flower arranging, tablescapes, coordinating right down to the directing of the ceremony and reception.

For the alter we rented antique columns from our friends at the Old House Depot and topped them with burlap wrapped ferns.

For Friday night's party, I made mason jar lanterns to hang over the dance area for a festive, southern touch. The wind didn't cooperate with us, as some blew out over the course of the evening...the one thing I couldn't control!

Holiday order time!

I know it's way too early to think about Christmas, but I already have people placing holiday orders! Crazy, right?! So, if you have a large order for family or coworkers, it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and get your name and rough order on my calendar just to make sure I can work it in the schedule by your deadline. Turn around for any item is running about 1- 1 1/2 weeks and will slow down to 2 weeks probably the first of October. Of course, if you get in a pinch, don't hesitate to check with me anyway. I can usually shuffle things around in the kiln! Thanks for all the support and business!

One of my favorite scenes at the fair. After the 5 minutes of craziness, the racetrack is littered with bright colors, tons of vintage lawn chairs and eerily quite. I raced for a spot one year for the sake of hearing some great Texas Country Music (Pat Green) and don't know that I can ever muster the courage to do it again...those people are hard core!

In an effort to broaden my market appeal, I have branched out a little to offer some pieces that have a more traditional pottery feel. I had someone tell me a few weeks ago that my pottery was very "distinct." I didn't quite know how to take that, so I just decide to woo them in with a few pieces "not so distinct" all the while hoping they will branch out at least a little bit...once they see how beautiful nontraditional pottery can be!

They say out of necessity comes creativity...and, well...TA-DA! My husband and I were having people over to watch a game and I needed something cute to serve popcorn, nuts and chex mix. We went out to my studio to brainstorm and thanks to my husband (this is one idea I can't take credit for) I crafted football bowls! This particular picture isn't that great, but you get the idea :)

This morning I took 2 friends to my supplier to pick out new glazes. We had so much fun. One picked out a glaze for dinnerware and the other for some serving pieces. I love to do custom glazes. All that means is: I take you with me to pick out a specific color. Your name goes on the glaze when I get back, and anytime you order a piece or someone else orders a present for you, I have a color I know you will love! It's a great idea for people who like pottery, but can't quite find the right color in a store. It also helps certain people...husbands...with Christmas and birthday shopping!
While I was there, I picked up 10 new colors, too! Check back the end of the week for pictures of my new Mississippi platter and color samples.

The 2009 Jubilee! JAM Arts Fair will open to the public, free of charge, at 9 a.m. on Saturday June 20th. The Arts Fair will wrap around two sides of the historic Mississippi Governor's Mansion on Congress Street and on Capitol Street. Over sixty regional artists, many of whom are members of the Craftsmen's Guild of Mississippi, will be displaying and selling their artwork on the historic streets of downtown Jackson until 3 p.m. Saturday. Throughout the day their will be live music on the stage and gospel performances inside St. Andrew's Cathedral (which will be air conditioned) as well as tons of family fun activities at Kid JAM from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Stop by and see me! Just look for the sage green tent and coolest pottery! :)

Here are some pics of a custom order of dinnerware. Cobalt Blue and Muddy Water glazes with blue inlaid glass. I was a little scared about how it would turn out, but ended up being pleased with the result. Best of all, the client loved it, and that's all that really matters!

An unfortunate accident one night while making a dish has turned into one of my new favorites! I stretched the clay while making a small bowl and as I placed it on the shelf to dry, I liked what I saw. I have refined the design to include a large ruffled border along the top rim of the piece. Available with or without inlaid glass. (and the first item below is in a new glaze I love!)
